Students proud of 'expert' lecturer

STUDENTS confessed to being “really proud” of their expert lecturer after she gave a keynote speech in front of 300 professionals in Manchester.
“Bringing students and professionals together as much as possible is part of our ethos here at Salford”, asserted the focus of their pride, Carole Conroy, senior lecturer in Occupational Health & Safety, of our Masters in Environment & Health programmes.
The students were invited as delegates to the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester where hundreds of executives and representatives from the private and public sector had their annual summit. And they were pleased and surprised to see their Carole chairing the event.
On the agenda employee health and wellbeing, hazards in the workplace, and a popular session on drink-driving – what an employer should know!
Meet the experts
“It’s great to get the chance to meet with experts in our field,” said Fatima Ibrahim. “It gave me a real insight of what professional bodies in health and safety offer to the public as well as what the public expects.”
Kayode Bidemi-Dada agreed it was “awesome”: It brought me in tune with the modern realities in the field of HSE. I really appreciate these opportunities to meet people and get to discuss the issues we’re studying.”

The 5th annual health and safety conference managed by the University of Salford and ONECPD featured keynote speaker Dr Paul Logan, director of Chemicals, Explosives and Microbiological Hazards Division, at the HSE who spoke on progress since the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and what is left to do still.

He explained the Executive’s strategy ‘Helping Great Britain Work Well’ and pointed to the 595,000 workers who suffer from work-related stress, depression and anxiety.p> Event chair Carole Conroy, had opened the conference with an engaging talk on simulating the effects of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder which is estimated to be responsible for over 4,000 occupationally related deaths each year.
Other speakers included the global head of h&s for HSBC Tim Eldrige, who is also VP for the Institution of Occupational Health & Safety, which has recently introduced a student category of membership designed to help students to plan their careers.
Career advice
Student Samantha Banfield agreed that attending a conference was a great opportunity for students: “Whilst initially daunting to be in a room of 300 professionals, they were more than willing to answer any questions and offer career advice. It was great to hear stories on how people had entered their careers and why over coffee and biscuits.
“I would certainly recommend students get out to conferences as it's great way to immerse yourself within the community.”
Colleague Ndah Monday added: The conference brought into context what I had learnt in class so far and was a great platform to network with professionals and industry leaders in Health and Safety. I really felt proud of my lecturer, Carole Conroy, delivering the key note address as the conference chair!”
