MANCHESTER Science Festival (October 18 -28) is now the most popular science festival in the country. But with more than 100 events to choose from, where to start?? Here’s our Top 10 science and tech things not to miss this year …..
1 The greatest ride in the Universe Distortions in Spacetime is a sensory experience of time and space.Play among the particle jets and experience physics head on. 18 - 28 October / Museum of Science & Industry (MoSI) / Adults and families 7+ / Free, booking required.
2 Electricity: The spark of life features stunning commissions from three artists to examine how scientists have harnessed this amazing force of nature. This Wellcome Collection exhibition uses iconic objects such as Edison light bulbs and smart technology to tell the story of how high voltage conquered the world. 18 - 28 October / MoSI / Adults / Free.
3 Gamelab: The University of Salford and VR Manchester bring you coding, drones, old school to experimental gaming, plus a Scavenger quiz and prizes. 20 - 21 October / MCUK Campus /Families 5+/11am – 5pm. Free.
4 Deep Ocean Lab withGreg Foot: Join the Blue Peter science guy as he recounts his adventure on a deep-sea research sub. Did he film at minus 1000ft? He certainly did; with stunning visuals. 22 October / The Lowry / £13, £9 concessions. Booking required.
5 MoSI runs regular reconstructions of the weaving machinery that propelled Manchester onto the world economic stage. MFS brings us a bilingual edition of the Manchester Mills Demo in both English and Bengali in honour of the many Bangladeshi mill workers who contributed to the Cottonopolis story. 23 & 28 October / MoSI / Adults + families 5. 6 The Problem with Plastic Following David Attenborough’s heartfelt intervention on behalf of dying wildlife, we are all acutely aware of the damage our plastic obsession is doing to Mother Nature. But what to do about it? Get up to speed on the campaigns and ideas. 24 October / MoSI / Families 7+. Free.
7 Microbes sound gross but they’re keeping you alive. Join University of Salford microbiologists for MICROBIhOME and explore the microbial world within you, make ‘bioselfies’ and sink beneath the biofilm on a virtual reality tour. 20-21 October. 11am– 5pm / MCUK Campus / Families 5+. Free.
8 Jokes may abound that it ran quicker in 1829 than yourNorthern Rail train but Stephenson’s Rocket is a serious piece of kit. It returns to Manchester to the actual line it ran on 180 years ago, the Liverpool- Manchester Railway now being home to the Museum of Science and Industry! 9 The Beat Box of Tricks. Ever wondered how a beat boxer imitates a full drum kit? Or why some singers are low and husky and others falsetto? Acoustics maestro Professor Trevor Cox and singers from the RNCM give an insight into the amazing human voice. 21 October /Band on the Wall / £5 (booking required).
10 WALL-E: 10thAnniversary Screening Watch Pixar’s masterpiece, then explore the ruined world seen in the movie. Use microscopes and air visual nodes to investigate the air quality and help clean up the atmosphere. 20 October / The Light Cinema Stockport / 2.30pm / £9 £6 (concessions).
