Uni to ‘takeover’ rugby club

Monday 25 February 2019

Salford University and Salford Red Devils Rugby League Club have teamed up for a special partnership, sharing expertise and giving students unique experience.

As part of the relationship the University will stage a ‘takeover day’ at the St Helens match on February 28. Students and staff for the University have been given discounted tickets but that is only the start of the takeover.

Before the game starts, students from the University’s Shock Radio will build the atmosphere at the AJ Bell Stadium, they will also do live commentary and post -match player interviews. And there will be reaction challenge game run by staff from the sports exercise team at the University.

Students from the journalism course will be helping with matchday communications and operations and at half time a crossbar challenge between fans and the University rugby team will entertain the crowd.

Longer term as part of the relationship a member of the Salford Business School will sit on the club’s board, and the University is now a kit sponsor.

The university and the club have already worked together on projects such as Fan Fit, which involves fans of the Red Devils signing up to the fitness app and competing with each other for prizes for who ever does the most exercise each month. The club also held its annual media launch day at the Universities MediaCityUK campus at the start of the month.

Jennifer Hinsley, Operations Manager at the University of Salford Business School, said: “This is a very exciting partnership for the university, which will give a huge range of our students the chance to experience the rugby, whether that is just as a fan or actually getting involved in helping to run a match day. It is a big part of our strategy to give our students real world experience and this partnership is a key part of that.”

Salford Red Devils Director, Paul King, said: “To have a strong working relationship with Salford University is fantastic and this ‘Takeover Day’ is the perfect opportunity for us to display this wonderful partnership. This day will allow a number of the University’s students to get involved with a gameday, whether that be offering assistance to the operations, entertainment or just coming and experiencing their first-ever Rugby League game.

“We’ve been working really hard on improving the matchday experience at the AJ Bell Stadium and offering a partner such as Salford University a ‘Takeover Day’ will only help us with this and I’m hoping all the students and staff of Salford University as well as the Salford Red Devils fans support the occasion.”
