Wedding Of The Year as new Jim Cartwright play comes to University of Salford

Wednesday 14 March 2018

A NEW production by renowned playwright Jim Cartwright at the University of Salford will see audience members taking the role of guests at the wedding reception from hell.

A Wedding, the latest collaboration between the University, Jim Cartwright and his Cartwright Studio, will feature highs, lows, bad behaviour – and bad dancing.

The play will be performed at the University’s New Adelphi Studio on March 21-22, with the theatre space transformed into a wedding reception and audience members sitting at tables while the action unfolds around them.

High comedy and dark doings

Jim, writer of plays such as The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice, said: “We’ve all been to this wedding – or something akin – and you’ll surely recognise the gobby great-aunts, drunk uncles and edgy in-laws. Theatre really does hold up a mirror to the world – so you might just glimpse your own reflections at A Wedding!

”It’s a riotous whirligig of emotions, which juxtaposes moments of high comedy with real poignancy and sometimes dark doings. Grab the confetti and get your glad rags on - you are cordially invited to the real wedding of the year.”

The 19-strong cast, complete with DJ, is made up of actors from Jim’s own while students from the University’s Film and TV Design programme created the set.

Best new northern talent

The performance is part of Jim’s commitment to showcasing the best new northern talent at the University, in plays he promises will be contemporary, original, and offer ‘theatre of head, heart and two fingers!’

It follows his first collaboration with the University last December, with the premiere of Burning Bright, in which actors such as Julie Hesmondhalgh, Warren Brown and Beverley Callard took to the New Adelphi Theatre performing new monologues by Jim – after alumni Peter Kay and Sian Gibson officially opened the building.

“Having Jim on board as Honorary Artistic Director of the New Adelphi Theatre is already transforming our students’ professional experience as they work on original material with one of the UK’s most celebrated theatre writers.

Frances Piper, Director of Performance at the University of Salford, said: “This is a fantastic collaboration between Jim, his actors, and our students.  The set design is guaranteed to thrill, as our students bring their talents to bear on creating a wonderful, celebratory environment.

“Having Jim on board as Honorary Artistic Director of the New Adelphi Theatre is already transforming our students’ professional experience as they work on original material with one of the UK’s most celebrated theatre writers. We’re working with Jim to open our theatre spaces to a diverse range of users and we hope A Wedding – with its informal atmosphere and relatable characters – will appear to a wide community.”
