Designer cuts swathe through international competition for second year

A fashion designer from the University of Salford has been selected from hundreds around the world in a global jeans competition.
It is the second time the University’s fashion department has been recognised in the international contest run by denim giants Levi’s.
Fashion student Val Galbo has made it into the final eight in the Levi’s x Arts Thread Design competition – joining a list which includes candidates from design schools in Paris, Tel Aviv and San Francisco.
Nearly 500 fashion students from 84 design schools across the world entered the contest, in which they were invited to create outfits for Levi’s Made & Crafted Fall Winter 2018 line.
Of the eight shortlisted, only two will be chosen to take part in a 10-week internship at Levi’s California headquarters this summer, where they will work alongside some of the best designers in the world.
The competition is now in its second year, and the University of Salford’s fashion design programme also enjoyed success in 2016 when students Karin Human and Emma Lewin made it into the final eight.
The University’s fashion department is also celebrating having been shortlisted for a prestigious Guardian University Award. The programme is one of just three universities across the UK to have reached the shortlist in the teaching excellence category, in recognition of an innovative collaboration they ran with a Chinese institution.
Judges were impressed with a project in which the University’s fashion students spent one day working with their counterparts at the Zhejing Fashion Institute of Technology (ZFIT) to produce a collection of outfits which had to be presented at their own fashion show. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on Wednesday 29 March.
University of Salford fashion design programme leader Bashir Aswat said: “To have reached the shortlist in two very prestigious competitions at the same time reflects the fact that our programme enables people to develop design skills and a contemporary understanding of the fashion industry that is unparalleled in the UK.
“Levi’s is an international household name and this competition seeks to find the best young designers around the world, so for our students to do so well in this global contest for the second year running really demonstrates the kind of talent we’re nurturing here in Salford – particularly given the fact that we are competing with some of the most prestigious schools around the globe.”
