Salford collaborates with Siemens on virtual reality

Friday 7 April 2017

THE UNIVERSITY is strengthening its partnership with Siemens by collaborating on virtual reality applications for its business.

The multinational recently launched a Salford BEng degree in Control & Automation Engineering and in 2016 signed an agreement to co-create new Degree Apprenticeships with the University.

Building on a long-standing relationship with THINKLab – the University’s advanced visualisation and software solutions centre – Siemens organised a workshop to explore the application and benefits of virtual reality within their business.

THINKlab has run multiple projects with Siemens including the creation of an interactive virtual model of their new Offshore Electrical Substation used for supporting their design reviews, product launch and now sales and marketing.

Visual Simulation

The workshop was attended by multi-disciplinary staff from Siemens UK and Germany who experienced first-hand demonstrations of Siemens project work co-created with THINKLab through the use of visualisation technologies such as HTC VIVE, Oculus Rift, Microsoft Surface Touch Table & large scale semi immersive VR displays.

The THINKLab team also demonstrated how advanced modelling and visualisation have been used by their other industry partners from  sectors such as rail, aerospace and construction to support interactive design reviews, 3D construction planning and public engagement.

Nigel Platt, System Engineering Manager, Siemens Manchester, said: “Salford’s demonstrations enabled us to see possibilities well beyond the models we have built so far – this was the perfect introduction to our review of how Siemens can further use these new visualisation techniques to add value to its business.”

Industry Collaboration Zones

Professor Terrence Fernando, Director of the THINKLab, said “We hope to build on this well established partnership to create an ambitious long term R&D programme with Siemens.”

Salford University runs a huge range of collaborations with industry – in training, research and enterprise – under its Industry Collaboration Zones strategy.
