Destination China for Salford's next business generation

Thursday 24 July 2014

Seven business-minded students arrived in China today (24 July) thanks to a new Salford-China internship program run in partnership between the University of Salford, Salford City Council and global internship provider, CRCC Asia.

The new programme gives Salford students the opportunity to complete a one month internship in Beijing whilst partnering with a small or medium sized enterprise (SME) based in Salford. On their return to the UK, interns will share their experience with Salford SME’s to provide an insight into the realities of operating in Chinese business markets.

The seven interns represent a diverse range of backgrounds, representing Romania, Slovakia, Austria and the UK, and include Fadi Anani, from Prestwich in Manchester. A 2014 Salford graduate in Financial Management and former Thai Kickboxing professional, Fadi said:

“The Salford-China internship program will help me become a more competent individual and professional, especially in cross cultural relationships, not just at work but in a personal context too. And the opportunity to work with Salford’s SMEs and represent the University in China is going to be a valuable experience. I just can’t wait to get out there and get started.”

Following an introduction to Chinese culture and language, the interns will begin a one-month placement in a Chinese business closely related to their individual business interests on Monday 28 July. Interns will work in business across a range of industries, covering green technology, finance, commercial law, e-commerce and fashion journalism.

Professor Martin Hall, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salford, said: “This partnership is unique. It benefits the interns by giving them experience of working at the heart of Chinese industry whilst offering the opportunity to share that knowledge with a business based right here in Salford.”

Salford City Major, Ian Stewart, said: “I had the pleasure of meeting all the students before they set off.  They’re extremely intelligent, dynamic young people and Salford will learn a lot from hearing about their experiences when they get back”.

Director of CRCC Asia, Edward Holroyd Pearce, said: “CRCC Asia is excited to be delivering the China internship element of the Salford-China Internship program. It is the first time that we have worked on a tri-partite partnership with the aim of improving student employability and international awareness, as well as forging new links between Chinese and UK businesses.

“We hope this will be a partnership that continues into the future, and look forward to welcoming this year's group of the University of Salford students to Beijing.”

The new Salford-China internship programme was officially launched at a special event at 'The Landing' at MediaCityUK in June 2014. To see photos from the event, please visit out Facebook page here.
