Salford Business School wins Times Higher Education Business School of the Year award

Friday 28 November 2014

Salford Business School won the Business School of the Year title at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards last night (Thursday 27 November) in recognition of its sector-leading work in supporting small and medium-sized businesses and offering students innovative industry experiences.

The THE Awards are the leading awards showcasing excellence in the UK higher education sector and Salford Business School’s win builds on its shortlisting for the same award at last year’s event.

Judges praised the way the School prioritises its ‘real-world’ impact with businesses, with 79% of staff regularly engaging with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

With a strategic focus on bringing businesses, students and academic staff together for ‘live’ student projects, internships and placements, the Business School recognises the importance of working with businesses to offer students the best possible experience, knowledge and skills during their degree.

The School offers a unique approach to flexible, postgraduate lifestyle learning, and the judging panel highlighted its integration of entrepreneurship and enterprise activity as part of its postgraduate programmes.

In addition, research expertise in digital business, social enterprise and sports business is illustrated through the University’s unique partnership with Manchester United’s legendary Class of ’92.

Crucially, the Business School appreciates the significant role it can play in promoting economic growth through working with businesses in the region. The School’s strength in this area led to the University of Salford being rated first in the North West and fifth in the UK for SME engagement in a report into universities and economic growth produced by Sir Andrew Witty for national Government in October 2013.

Salford Business School has also received the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and Association of Business School’s Small Business Charter award for its dedication to improving links with the SME community in the local area.

THE Awards panel judge and Group Business Development Director of UPP, Paul Marshall, described Salford Business School as a “very worthy winner”, adding: “In a year of noticeable successes for the School, the judges were particularly impressed by the ways in which it successfully maximised the real-world impact achieved by staff and students, particularly in relation to the difficult-to-reach small business community.”

Professor Amanda Broderick, Executive Dean of Salford Business School, said: “2014 has been another fantastic year for Salford Business School. Our innovation in an industry-facing curriculum, trail-blazing work in SME engagement and social enterprise and world-leading research in digital business and sports innovation is of huge value to our amazing students, alumni, business partners and our wider community.

“To be recognised as THE Business School of the Year is really testament to the hard work and brilliance of our team. Key to our mission is the raising of aspirations for all our communities.”
