Don’t miss a weekend of family-friendly fun at our high-tech campus at MediaCityUK, Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October, drop-in between 10:00am - 4:00pm. Entrance is free to all visitors.
Our Salford Science weekend forms an essential part of the 2014 Manchester Science Festival - a nine-day, multi-venue festival that engages and inspires people with science, building their confidence in exploring and questioning science in the most creative ways possible. Proudly produced by the Museum of Science and Industry, the University of Salford is the Festival's lead education sponsor.
The three main exhibitions are all interactive and are accompanied by hands-on experiments and demonstrations, that people of all ages can get involved with and enjoy:
MARVELS OF TELEVISION
Marvels of Television demonstrates how things have changed from the first black and white sets, to the amazing things we see on our screens today. Visit our state-of-the-art digital TV studios to see how programmes are made and learn about how television pictures are delivered. You can be transported to a different world, using green screen trickery. Expert engineers will show how images move from studio to screen, and you can work with them to test out the latest ultra-high definition 4K TV technologies.
DIGITIAL RETRO
Digital Retro is an interactive exhibition, where you can go back to the 80s to use classic home computers from Sinclair, Commodore and Acorn and play some of the first electronic games. Find out how to write your own computer programs for the latest innovations such as the Raspberry Pi.
FROM SEMAPHORE TO SMARTPHONE
From Semaphore to Smartphone shows the evolution of how we communicate with each other. You can try your hand at sending messages by flying flags or Morse Code and phone a friend on a retro phone. See how telephone calls are made and how the internet works. You can meet the engineers who make the magic happen and can explain to you how your devices work.
There will be lots of other indoor and outdoor activities for families to enjoy including: making seed bombs; see how UV technology can expose communicable diseases; view giant photographs of insects; make your own electricity on a hydro bike; discover how DNA works and diseases spread; and even meet some robots. Hop on board the outdoor broadcast truck to find out how pictures get transmitted from virtually any location.
Ahead of the weekend, on Friday 24 October history enthusiasts can discover Chapel Street’s industrial heritage on a guided tour The Archaeology of a Revolution. On Friday 31 October, head to the Museum of Science and Industry for an illuminating talk on Excavating Peterloo.
The University of Salford is Lead Educational Sponsor of Manchester Science Festival 2014. Events take place at over 40 venues across Greater Manchester, from 23 October to 2 November.
