Stunning interactive art installation added to Salford Science weekender at MediaCityUK

Wednesday 15 October 2014

Visitors to the free Salford Science weekender on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October are invited to take part in an interactive artwork to illustrate the spread of infectious diseases, as part of Manchester Science Festival.

Created by an award winning team of programmers, artists and engineers, TRANSMISSION INTERACTIVE by Becs Andrews Company will transform the University of Salford’s state-of-the-art Digital Performance Lab into a stunning visual and sonic world.

The eye-opening artwork uses interactive technologies such as wireless wristbands and Kinect devices to track visitor movements, triggering visual displays of colour form and light combined with emotive music to create an immersive, hypnotically mesmerising environment.

Inspired by the similarities between the spread of ‘infectious’ ideas through social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, and the transmission of real-world diseases like Ebola through human populations, the installation unites art and science to engage audiences.

Artist and Stage Designer Becs Andrews has worked in collaboration with Evolutionary Biologist Professor Michael Brockhurst (University of York) to create the innovative installation described by audiences as “beautiful”, “exciting” and “awesome”.

TRANSMISSION INTERACTIVE accompanies a series of family friendly free science events the University of Salford is holding as Lead Educational Sponsor of Manchester Science Festival.
