University of Salford launches study into international healthcare volunteering

Wednesday 10 September 2014

Experts gather at University of Salford’s Media City UK campus to explore the benefits of UK health workers volunteering overseas.

Next Tuesday, 15 September, Professors Maggie Pearson and Louise Ackers from the University of Salford and Dr Lucie Byrne-Davis from the University of Manchester, will be hosting the launch of the MOVE (measuring the outcomes of volunteering for education). The two year project sets about understanding and measuring the educational benefits of international placements for UK healthcare workers.

The one day event will take place at University of Salford’s campus at Media City UK. Guest speakers will be Lord Crisp, who is the co-chair of the all-party parliamentary group on global health and Professor Ged Byrne, from Health Education North West. Delegates will take part in a number of workshops designed to share their expertise, define the benefits of international placements and what conditions are necessary for them to be realised.

The project is funded by Health Education England and will involve a panel of experts, who will work with volunteer organisations to gather their data and understand their experiences.
