Daily Telegraph gives Salford media students the edge

Wednesday 4 May 2016

University of Salford media students were given a unique insight into how to be chosen by employers when they attended an exclusive academy event held by the Daily Telegraph.

Staff from the newspaper came to the University’s MediaCityUK campus to provide students from a wide range of courses with insider knowledge on how media employers are currently recruiting, as well as giving them practical advice on how to get a break in the industry.

Year two and three students from programmes including Journalism and Broadcasting to Animation and Digital Media were given behind the scenes insight and practical skills during the event on May 3.

The session featured practical workshops led by Telegraph staff, advice on video and digital portfolios and expert guidance to prepare students for the ‘assessment days’ which are now used by large media organisations when choosing graduates to work for them.

The Telegraph Media Group held a handful of similar events at institutions around the country but chose the University of Salford as its partner in the north of England.

The event was held as part of the University’s two-month Create Salford Festival, which showcases the achievements of students from the School of Arts and Media and celebrates the University’s close links with the media industry.

The festival, running until June, also includes art and photography exhibitions, poetry readings, music concerts, and a fashion show at Hotel Football, while the Pilot Light TV Festival – organised by a University graduate and featuring big names from the world of television – is also being held as part of the event.

Paul Broster, director of journalism at the University of Salford, said: “Students from our courses need to be at the top of their game as the media industry is well known for being incredibly competitive, but being able to attend an event like this – provided by some of the best people in their field – will give them a real edge.

“The Telegraph is being incredibly proactive about reaching out to fresh talent from a diverse range of backgrounds and it’s very encouraging that they have chosen to bring this unique event to Salford.”

Colin Campbell-Austin, of The Telegraph Media Group, said: "It’s well known that a diverse workforce promotes creativity, which will help us and the industry as a whole to continue to innovate and be distinctive.

“We want to attract the best talent from all backgrounds and walks of life, to challenge and encourage people to think in different ways. This event has given us the chance to share our experience and demystify what we as an industry really look for in people.

“We have met some amazingly talented people and look forward to further building a relationship with Salford University and its amazingly talented students."
