Exciting, new composition by Dr Alan Williams to be premiered in BBC Radio 4 Drama

Tuesday 5 January 2016

The University of Salford has over the years developed a strong relationship with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since last September, chamber ensembles from the Phil have featured in monthly classical music concerts in Peel Hall, as part of a wider aim to bring music to the heart of the community. This Chamber Music Mondays at Peel series continues until July with the next performance scheduled for 15 February at 5.45pm.

As a by-product of this flourishing partnership, Dr Alan Williams Pathway Leader on our MA Music Programme has worked with the Orchestra to create music for a BBC Radio 4 drama which will be recorded this Friday at MediaCityUK.

Radio Drama ‘The Kraken Wakes’  is a modern retelling of John Wyndham’s 1953 apocalyptic novel, adapted by crime writer and dramatist Val McDermid and featuring a stellar cast.

Alan has composed a brand new orchestral score, which ‘plays the part’ of the great sea monster during the performance.  His music will be performed by the BBC Philharmonic during the two-part live recording and you can book tickets for the event by clicking here.

The drama will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 later in the year.

Dr Williams will also be working with the BBC’s Research and Development teams in an audience research project later this year. This will take the form of an online game to assess audience memory of musical material.
