Industry welcomes accelerated degrees in the Built Environment

The University of Salford’s prestigious suite of degrees for the built environment sector are to be available from September 2016 in a new accelerated format.
The ‘accelerated degrees’ – the first in the UK construction and property sectors - are sure to be welcomed by students and employers looking for greater flexibility and the opportunity to achieve academic ambitions earlier.
From September 2016, the University will offer accredited degrees in Architectural Design & Technology, Building Surveying, Construction Project Management, Quantity Surveying, and Property and Real Estate, available both full-time and part-time.
Professor Hisham Elkadi, Dean of the University’s School of the Built Environment, explained: “This is all about organising our provision around the market and creating a service of quality education which suits the needs of learners and employers.
“We will still offer the traditional degree format but are truly delighted to be offering an alternative for those who are keen to progress more rapidly into the profession.
“At Salford we have a long tradition of working with industry and we believe this innovative approach reinforces our position as one of the top built environment schools in the UK and the world*.
Huge demand
Daniel Cadman, Partner at surveying practice Rider Levett Bucknall, believes there will be huge student demand for the new degree: “Not only will students benefit from the same high quality end product from one of the UK’s leading universities in the built environment, they will also pay substantially reduced fees as well gaining an additional year’s salary by entering the workplace twelve months earlier than their peers on traditional full time programmes,” he said.
“The professions should welcome this approach; there is increasing demand for high quality graduates and this programme will deliver them faster. Those graduates will have also been through a more intensive training programme which is better aligned to the realities of the workplace they are about to enter.”
John Williamson of Redrow Homes Ltd said: “The University of Salford is clearly demonstrating that it is responding to the changing learning requirements of today’s construction industry.”
Students who commit to an accelerated pathway will benefit from the same learning experience as they would on a traditional degree programme but will be engaged in their studies throughout three trimesters in each calendar year, leading to earlier attainment of their accredited degree. UK and EU students will also benefit from much reduced costs, having to pay fees over only two years, thus saving £9,000.
Post-professional
For a post-professional market, the accelerated degrees are also available on a day release or part-time basis. A traditional undergraduate degree studied part-time typically takes 57 months to complete, whereas on an accelerated route it will take just 36 months.
Professor Elkadi added: “Those in work, who cannot commit to full-time study, can still access our high-quality undergraduate programmes and progress more quickly in their career.”
