Professor David Spicer has joined The University of Salford as Dean of the Business School.

Professor Spicer was previously Interim Dean of the Faculty of Management and Law at the University of Bradford.

His experience will be invaluable in helping to develop Salford Business School, as well as playing a key role in the ambitious Industrial Collaboration Zone project.

Professor Spicer said: “I’m looking forward to the challenge of taking on the successful Salford Business School. There is some great work already going on within the school which I hope to be able to build on to develop Salford Business School as an internationally recognised centre of excellence for industry focused business and management education.”

At Bradford, David led on several strategic initiatives and was instrumental in leading the development of the Faculty’s mission and strategy to support delivery of the University’s new vision. He made significant strides in strengthening the School’s reputation, overseeing the enhancement of its programmes and developing research rankings and accreditation.

Prior to joining Bradford, David worked for the University of Plymouth Business School where he undertook doctoral research and also worked as a lecturer in the human resources study group.

Before moving into higher education he began his career working for Woolworths, as both a store manager and in human resources where he had responsibilities for recruitment and management development.

An eminent researcher, David’s expertise lies in the field of organisational development and change. He has been working on a major project with two multinational high technology firms and the outcomes of this research have been used to fundamentally shape the HR and business strategies in these firms.

He has also worked and consulted in both public and private sectors with a number of well-known organisations including AstraZeneca, Cannon, the BBC, Emirates Airlines and the NHS.

His research has been published widely in a number of leading peer reviewed journals including The British Journal of Management, Long Range Planning and the Human Resource Journal. He was also awarded a Best Reviewer’s prize by the Management Education and Development Division for 2005 Academy of Management Conference, and was Track Chair for Knowledge and Learning at the 2005 and 2006 British Academy of Management Conferences.

Professor Helen Marshall, Vice Chancellor of The University of Salford, said: “David brings with him a wealth of experience, both academic and commercial, an excellent research record and a strong track record of leadership. I wish David every success in his new role and am confident that with his stewardship the reputation of our award winning business school will continue to go from strength to strength.”
