Salford demonstrates its strong business links

Friday 29 April 2016

OUR strategy of closer ties with business has propelled the University 15 places to 61st in the Higher Education Business and Community Interaction Survey.

This 27% climb comes against a sector average growth of six per cent.

We are also ranked higher for income generation than our comparator set of alliance universities, which includes Manchester Metropolitan University, Liverpool John Moores and Huddersfield.

The survey carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) details income from and interactions with businesses and the wider community, including consultancy, contractual work and collaborative research.

Consultancy and upskilling

It also accounts for facilities hire, intellectual property and regeneration income plus continuing professional development which is run through our training company Salford Professional Development.

It shows £3.2 million coming into the University – more than 27 per cent up on last year – and places Salford 34th out of 160 universities for consultancy and 41st for Continuing Professional Development rising 21 and 13 places respectively.

Another area of success is in Knowledge Transfer Partnerships – pioneered by the university of Salford in the 1970s to help businesses overcome particularly obstacles to growth   – of which we run 14 at the moment with small-to-medium businesses across the North West.

Professors Nigel Mellors, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise said: “This is excellent news and lays a solid foundation to support our core strategy as we move forward with our Industry Collaboration Zones. Many congratulations to all the dedicated enterprise professionals and academics in Schools and the Research and Enterprise team for this tremendous result.”
