Salford’s commitment to gender equality receives Athena SWAN award

Thursday 28 April 2016

The University of Salford has been presented with a ‘Bronze Award’ from the Equality Challenge Unit’s (ECU) Athena SWAN Charter for its commitment to gender equality.

This comes as part of the University’s dedication to the career progression and retention of female staff in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM).

The ECU’s Athena SWAN Charter, which was designed in 2005, encourages and recognises the commitment made by institutions that are advancing the careers of (STEMM) employment in Higher Education and research.

Awards go to institutions that address unequal gender representation across academic disciplines, professional and support functions and who remove the obstacles faced by women.

Salford adopted the ECU’s Athena SWAN Charter in 2014, and has since been embedding its commitment to this progressive charter by reviewing and adopting key principles into polices, practices, action plans and institutional culture.

The Charter is in relation to women’s representation, progression of students into academia, journey through career milestones, and their working environment.

University of Salford Vice-Chancellor, Professor Helen Marshall said: "I am delighted that our ongoing commitment to advancing the careers of women in academia has been recognised.

“We are committed to continuing the delivery of our action plan and taking the steps to improve the representation of women at all levels.”
