Italian literature honour for Salford academic

Monday 13 November 2017

A FOOTBALL book co–written by a University of Salford academic has won a prestigious Italian literature award.

Quiet Leadership, winning hearts, minds and matches, a look at the methods of manager Carlo Ancelotti, won the Antonio Ghirelli award from the Italian Football Association. It was co-written by Ancelotti and Professor Chris Brady, Director of the Sports Business Unit in the University of Salford Business School.

Quiet Leadership won in the management and economics category, against over 130 other nominations. The award was presented at a special ceremony at the FA headquarters in Turin.

Ancelotti has had a distinguished managerial career, having managed some of the biggest clubs in the world in England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany, including Chelsea, Juventus, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich and winning some of the biggest trophies in world football.
He is renowned for being a tactical manager who thinks deeply about the game.

Speaking after receiving the award, Professor Brady said: “I think we were both happy with the way the book came out in the end and to win the award makes it even better, especially given the competition we were up against.

“Working with Carlo was great, he is very smart and humble and is always looking for something a bit different.

“I spent a considerable amount of time with him at his Vancouver home as we prepared material for the book so I got to know him really well. We were spending all day together working on the book.

“I got a great insight into his personality and management style and that is where the title of the book came from. He rarely gets riled and excited but he is thinking about football all the time.

“I would like to think that Carlo had a good experience writing the book, I think he would say that I’m quite demanding and focussed and he enjoyed the result.”
