Royal Institute mentors for Salford Architecture degree

Wednesday 22 November 2017

ARCHITECTURE students will ‘buddy-up’ with some of the region’s top practices to boost their skills and knowledge, it has been announced.

The BSc Architecture programme run the world-leading* School of the Built Environment was recently validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Now the School has been invited to put forward students for the RIBA Student Mentoring Scheme, which matches undergraduates with professional architects to aid their development.

The mentoring scheme provides students with an opportunity to spend time with an architect in practice, helping enhance their learning experience whilst completing their undergraduate studies.

Understanding professional role

Through personal contact and regular involvement, mentoring gives opportunities for students and mentors to discuss and develop joint understanding of professional practice in the context of the rapidly-changing role of architects.

RIBA Architectural Communities Manager Marc Heuston said: “The recent validation of the University of Salford takes us to 220 students for 2017/18 and we are grateful for the support and contribution of so many RIBA members.

'The RIBA is committed to supporting students to help them to develop towards becoming fully-qualified architects, whilst at the same time strengthening the links between practice, academia and the RIBA in the North West'.

Professor Hisham Elkadi, Dean of the School of Built Environment said: “We are happy to provide our students with such excellent opportunities that enhance their work readiness. This initiative also provides an excellent example of applying and taking forward our ICZ strategy of working in partnership  with industry and the professions to create greater opportunity for students.”
