Students recognised at Broadcast Journalism awards

3rd year Journalism student, Jennifer Smith won her category “Best TV news item” for her project “The Struggle to Access Help for Eating Disorders”.

Journalism student and BBC reporter, Inzy Rashid came runner up in his category “Best Radio News Item” and also graduate, Bethan Holmes who works as the Content Editor for Quays News, came runner up in her category “Best TV Feature”.

Jennifer said: “It was a fantastic evening last night. To have so many successful people, who are where we all hope to be one day, share their advice and experience with us was amazing.

On winning the award, Jennifer said: “It was a big shock when they read my name as the winner, I truly wasn’t expecting it at all. 

“After seeing the work of the other two nominees in my category, I was just happy being nominated.”

On being awarded a certificate by the BJTC, Jennifer was also invited to ITV’s studios in London by Senior Programme Editor, Richard Frediani for a day’s work experience at ITV News. 

Andrew Lindsay, lecturer on the Broadcast Journalism course said: “There’s another package of Jen’s that often plays around our Media City campus, in which she’s reading to school children.

“She’s a natural, but this shows she’s equally adept at harder news and it’s great that the BJTC has recognised that.

“We’re seeing a pattern of students who take feedback constructively and volunteer for our extra-curricular output in Quays News, producing strong work. It surely gives them a better chance in the jobs market too.”

The Broadcast Journalism degree, recently received accreditation form the broadcast journalism training council (BTJC) which means the course has proven that it meets industry standards.
