Voyage into the future

Wednesday 2 August 2017

A HOST of high-profile business leaders gathered at the University of Salford’s THINKLab Pod to look into the future of British industry.

Insider worked with Salford University's Maker Space to devise an outlook for businesses in the year 2025. During the event, businesses were asked what technology will disrupt their industry between now and 2025 and what are they doing now to digitise their company.

Businesses face a constant challenge to improve productivity, streamlining operations, improving staff wellbeing, investing in digital and tech and tackling the skills gap.

The Centre for Digital Business at Salford Business School has been researching this very topic and produced a number of papers. Insider, along with invited business leaders and Dr Maria Stukoff and Dr Gordon Fletcher at the university, pieced together a vision for the businesses of the future.

Dr Fletcher said:  “The key is that when students walk in here aged 18, they go out three years later with a degree, but walking into a business environment is different. Apprenticeships are key and are emphasised more now. I use to bemoan job ads that had a list of software which becomes more like a shopping list than a wish list. It leaves off the unspoken, that they want a student with skills, forward thinking and experimental thinking.”
