Construction industry experts join University of Salford

THE University of Salford has appointed several high-profile industry figures to support training and research in its world-class* School of Built Environment.
Mark Farmer, the UK housing and industrial policy adviser, will help develop innovative education and training models to build on Salford’s pioneering two-year ‘accelerated degrees’.
Author of the 2016 Farmer Review, his report highlighted how the UK’s lack of investment in construction education and training was impacting on our capacity to build new housing and infrastructure.
Dr Mark Bew MBE also joins as visiting professor. Mark led the uptake of digitalised processes in UK construction by chairing the development of the UK Government BIM Strategy and the UK BIM Task Group. Chairman of PCSG, a leading international consultancy, he was awarded the MBE in 2011 for services to construction and has a PhD in the digital prediction of social outcomes through the built environment..
Real estate
Following on from her honorary doctorate from Salford in July, Claire Handby (pictured below), head of Deloitte’s Regional Real Estate-Capital Projects Business Unit joins as an honorary professor, as does Salford graduate and CEO of Swinton-based firm Property Tectonics Trevor Mole.
Mike Ormersher, Research & Product Development Director at the British Board of Agrément which certifies UK construction products also joins formally after a long relationship with the university’s Energy House home energy testing facility.
Head of planning and transport at the city of Karlsruhe, Germany, Professor Anke Woessner, also comes on board as an honorary professor, with the final appointment Alison Watson, MBE, CEO of built environment education consultancy Class of Your Own joining as honorary visiting fellow.
Built on industry
Professor Hisham Elkadi, dean of the School of Built Environment, said: “As one of the leading centres for construction education in Europe, we have established extensive industry relationships at home and abroad over a number of years to ensure our training and research is up to the minute.
“At a time of rapid change in property and construction, these new appointments will help support our strategy to put industry partnerships at the heart of the School’s operations.”
