Design duo taking on the world

Tuesday 27 November 2018

TWO talented designers have launched a new business thanks to support from the University of Salford.

Darya Meskes and Denisa-Alexandra Anghel have started up DAR studio, focussing on video, animations, branding and marketing. They are part of the Launch@SalfordUni incubator which opened earlier this year. As part of Launch@SalfordUni, run by the Careers and Enterprise team and supported by the Business School, they get access to office space and regular mentoring and masterclass sessions from a range of entrepreneurs.

They have previous experience as freelance designers and graduated from a BA design at Salford which is where they met and began collaborating. Among the creations the pair have already made is a board game aimed at encouraging creativity in children. They have received support from the Business Growth Hub and they have also benefitted from the Santander Start-Up Award which gave them funding to progress with their business idea.

Darya said: “It feels like we are doing something worthwhile. It is such a competitive industry and finding the right path can be difficult and intimidating. It is a difficult time to break into the industry but I feel we can do it now.”

The pair met at Salford University and hit it off straight away.

Denisa added: “As we worked on our university projects we discovered we do amazing work together, so we thought why not start working together and set up our own studio.

“The fact that we have this space is something that makes it feel real, that we are getting somewhere. The drive and the push from Launch is such a big help as we set off on this journey.”

Justyna Turner, Incubation Manager at the University of Salford, said: “Both Darya and Denisa have a great passion for their work and that shone through when they applied to be part of Launch. I’m sure as they get more advice and guidance from our expert mentors they will be able to grow a business that works and creates some amazing things.”
