Eminent cancer scientist among world's elite

SALFORD cancer scientist Michael Lisanti has been named as one of the UK most highly cited researchers in a European Commission list.
Michael, who is Chair in Translational Medicine, publishes prolifically with his team on the genetics and molecular biology of cancer, with a particular focus on tumour metabolism, cancer stem cells and drug resistance.
Together with Professor Federica Sotgia, his research laboratory also focuses on the repurposing of existing FDA-approved drugs as new cancer therapies and on new drug discovery targeting cancer metabolism.
Michael is ranked 35th in the UK and 393rd in the world in a list of eminent researchers –dead and alive – which features Michel Foucault, Shizuo Akira and Sigmund Freud in the Top 10.
Google Citations
The list of more than 2,600 researchers is based on Google Scholar Citations and is ranked first by h-index in decreasing order and then by the total number of citations as a secondary criteria.
This ranking is funded by the Project ACUMEN European Commission 7th Framework Programme, Capacities, Science in Society 2010.
Michael Lisanti joined the School of Environment & Life Sciences in 2016 from the University of Manchester and his research team has already attracted more than £1 million in funding.
His research includes studies of the impacts of Vitamin C on cancer stem cells, a new method for creating antibiotics (see video) and the first global trial of the effects of over-the-counter drugs on pre-surgery cancer patients.
-Professor Lisanti will be a keynote speaker at the 8th Scientific Days on Autophagy Conference, Montpellier, France.
