Future of media discussed at Nations and Regions: Media Futures

HOW the next generation use the media and what the future holds will be under discussion at the 25th Nations and Regions Media Conference.

Nations and Regions: Media Futures is a free event, hosted by the University of Salford at its MediaCityUK campus, which brings together the media industry and both young consumers and creators of content to find out just what it is that makes the next generation tick and to discuss the driving forces for commissioners now and in the future.

High profile speakers from the world of TV, Radio and Online will discuss trends and how they see the changes coming in the fast-paced media world impacting on and shaping their audiences and new emerging talent. Among the guest speakers will be Luke Hyams and Kelley Sweeney from YouTube Originals, discussing the types of shows YouTube Originals is looking to commission and create, plus members of Hollyoaks cast who will be talking about how metal illness is depicted on the show.

BBC Three will discuss and highlight how the channel is helping support the creation of sustainable media careers outside London, and 6 Music commissioning editor, Julie Cullen will discuss how they are aiming to pick up younger audiences and what they are looking for in the next generation of content makers. 

Beth Hewitt, of the University of Salford and Director of Nations and Regions: Media Futures, said: “The media industry is keen to meet and understand younger audiences so that it remains relevant and competitive, and Nations and Regions: Media Futures provides a platform to connect and collaborate with the UK’s emerging new talent. The media landscape is changing rapidly and Nations and Regions: Media Futures aims to shine a light on how today’s media is serving its audiences and what its audiences want.

“For industry, this is a great opportunity to be inspired and find out what’s engaging young people, discovering what they really watch and how they both consume and create media.

“From live pitches to industry provocations, the event will reveal fascinating media insights, encouraging industry to meet new talent, seek out innovation and create the agenda for the next generation.”
