Historic line-up for Greater Manchester Archaeology Day

DIGGING into our past has never been easier thanks to the University of Salford’s acclaimed Archaeology team!
Whether it’s discovering a Roman road or explaining the archaeology of the Peterloo Massacre, the award-winning team, led by Dr Mike Nevell, manage to achieve archaeology both for the people and the history books.
A showcase of what they do and who they work with is on show this weekend for Greater Manchester Archaeology Day - Saturday, 24 November.
The day is for practitioners, professionals and members of the public and includes talks on highlights from a wide range of over the last year, including:
Highlights
- Three Castle Surveys: Caernarfon, Lancaster and Newark
- Unravelling the mystery of a ruin: the medieval grange at Castleshaw
- New Bailey Prison, Salford
- Post Medieval pottery in the North West
- The North West Regional Research Framework for the Historic Environment
- Landgate Roman Road, Wigan
- Covent Garden, Stockport
- The Archaeology of Angel Meadow
- From Stone to Iron – Medieval Monastic Magic in the Holcombe Valley
New publications will be launched and there will a chance to browse and buy archaeology books, look at finds displays by the Centre for Applied Archaeology, and view displays from local archaeology societies.

Dr Mike Nevell, Head of Archaeology at the university, said: “We’ve Roman road excavations, medieval iron working and monastic farming, skeletal analysis, a range of early workers’ housing excavations and insights into the site of the world’s largest Sunday School!
“You can even view the Historic Environment Record for Greater Manchester, which is fascinating in itself.”
