IS WOOD set to be the construction material of the future?
Civil & Architectural Engineering students from the University of Salford are about to find out at a national competition at the University of Sheffield (Feb 8-9).
The TRADA University Challenge brings 60 students from multiple disciplines together in ten teams of six, and then challenges them to design a building predominantly from timber.
Engineers, designers, architects and building surveyors team up to design a student accommodation building big on health and well-being,energy efficiency, and building to budget.
Working with industry
David Hopkins of chief sponsor TTF said the Challenge gave young professionals first-hand experience of the application of timber in a complex architectural project.
Each team includes two architects or architectural technologists, two engineers, a landscape architect and a quantity surveyor –creating situations and relationships comparable to project teams – with industry professionals providing support.
Judges include architects Alex Abbey of Cullinan Studio,Waugh Thistleton’s Kieran Walker and dRMM’s Patrick Usborne; engineers Tom Harley-Tuffs of Ramboll, AKT II’s Ricardo Candel, and Arup’s Jaffel Versi; quantity surveyor Oliver Booth of Gardiner & Theobald; and landscape architect Stephanie Crewe of LUC.
Dr Tahsin Toma Sabbagh, Programme leader on the Civil & Architectural Engineering degree, said: “The brief is tight – to incorporate sponsors’ products while working around real life constraints provided by the existing site: an old shopping centre in the heart of Sheffield’s shopping district.”
Universities involved include Bath, Bournemouth, Bristol, Canterbury, Cardiff, Coventry, Derby, Dundee, Edinburgh Napier, Herts, Leicester DMU, Liverpool, Newcastle, Norwich University of the Arts, Nottingham Trent, Reading, Salford, Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, Strathclyde, Trinity St David, UEL, UWS, and UWE.
