Nursing at Salford up for FIVE UK awards

A QUARTET of inspirational nursing students have been nominated for the Nursing Times’s Student Awards 2019.
Our amazing students are up for Student Nurse of the Year (Children), Student Innovation in Practice and Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year.
With two staff colleagues Jacqueline Leigh and Lisa Littlewood also nominated in the Partnership of the Year category, it is a record haul of ‘finalists’ for the University which is the second largest provider of undergraduate nursing courses and the largest educator of Allied Health Professionals in the North West.
Dean of the School of Health & Society, Professor Margaret Rowe said: “This is the first year we have had so many nominations and it demonstrates the capability of students and staff at the University of Salford.
“Students who come to Salford are offered an innovative education using state of the art stimulation and quality clinical placements from excellent NHS providers in Greater Manchester.”
Our nominees on the NT shortlist are:
Laura Shannon - Laura, from Pendlebury, Salford, is up for Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year having excelled both academically and pastorally despite having to overcome a debilitating brain condition. “The experiences I have had have made me more dedicated and passionate about nursing,” said the 29-year-old MA Mental Health Nursing student.
Stephen Greenwood - Steve, from Whitefield, Manchester is nominated for Student Innovation in Practice for creating and running a course in Radio Production and Podcasting for recovering patients, families and carers. The Salford music and broadcasting graduate has won funding for his courses which have been adopted by the NHS and use creativity as a vehicle for recovery and resilience.
Karen Whitehead - Karen is also nominated for Student Innovation in Practice for her project ‘Raising Awareness of Substance Abuse: Informing Colleagues and Practice
Jennifer Harrison – Jennifer has been nominated for Student Nurse of the Year (Children) for a raft of pro-active action including setting up a NICE evidence search champion scheme, organising an Adverse Childhood Experiences event. She was recently selected for the National Student Leaders programme.
Jacqueline Leigh, a reader in Nursing and Lisa Littlewood, Director of Placement and Practice Learning in the School are acknowledged in the Partnership of the Year category for the Synergy Project, a Greater Manchester-wide approach to a shared practice learning model and governance system, with emphasis on patient-centred care, student nurse leadership development and peer learning.

The University of Salford is a strong supporter of the Student Nursing Awards, this year as sponsor of the main Student Nurse of the year (Adult) award.
Brian Boag, associate dean of the School is on the panel of judges, which includes Peter Carter, former chief executive of the Royal College of Nursing.
Added Margaret Rowe: “For staff to also be nominated in partnership of the year which is focused on enhancing student support in clinical practice is wonderful and is embedded into the Universities strategy of collaboration with Industry.”
