Salford radiography lecturer given Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award

Monday 25 February 2019

An Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Salford has won an award from the Countess of Chester Hospital for her work treating patients.

Judith Kelly received the Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award, given to clinicians who have gone above and beyond in their role.

Judith was nominated by her team in the radiology department and the breast screening unit at the hospital for her role in shaping the delivery of breast cancer screening throughout the country.

She said that she was surprised, but also happy, to have received the award.

She explained: “I’d never consciously wondered what others thought about how I perform my role. I have literally just tried to do my job to the best of my ability over the years for two simple reasons:

“I believe it is my obligation towards patients, colleagues and others who my job brings me into contact with [and] I really enjoy my job.”

Peter Hogg, Professor in Radiography at The University of Salford, who was Judith’s MSc dissertation supervisor in 2002, explained that following completion of her master’s Judith gained her first consultant post at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

He said: “Since then she has had an extremely strong relationship with students and staff at The University of Salford.

“Aside teaching she has had a substantial involvement with our breast cancer research, and she started co-authoring research with us around 2006.”

Judith has taught on the breast cancer diagnosis pathway in one of the MSc programmes for over a decade and has co-authored work in a range of journals and conferences, she has also co-edited a book about mammography.

Peter added: “Her enthusiasm, dedication and support for us has been significant and sustained and there is no doubt in my mind that she has made a substantial contribution to the success of our teaching and research in the field of breast cancer diagnosis.

“She is amazing and it comes as no surprise that she won the award at the Countess of Chester Hospital. We are super proud of her …. and she is one of ours.”
