Salford Law finishes runner-up in Commonwealth moot

STUDENTS representing Salford Law have finished runners up in a commonwealth mooting competition.
Emma Clarke and Ja’Far Imam, Salford Law students, were representing the UK at the Commonwealth Legal Association moot in Zambia. A moot is a simulated appeal court experience where the students argue against an opposing team in front of a panel of judges, who then decide the winner.
And they finished second in the competition which featured teams from India, Uganda, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, Zambia as well as the UK.
Emma and Ja’Far reached the competition after winning the English speaking Union-Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition, which has long been established as the most prestigious mooting competition in the UK. They went all the way to the final but lost to Canada in the final round.
Ja'Far said: "There was a consistently high level of advocacy from the teams we faced. It was interesting to see the varying styles of advocacy from the competitors. These ranged from the more deferential to the more conversational, similarly different teams would focus more on legal technicalities as opposed to other elements of style.”
Kirsty Mayle, who has coached the team, said: "It has been an absolute privilege and immensely rewarding to have had the opportunity to provide mooting opportunities. We have worked incredibly hard throughout, and I am absolutely thrilled at the result."
To prepare the students Kirsty has been coaching the Salford mooting since Sept 2017. This involves weekly advocacy classes, an internal competition as well as entering the national competitions. In addition to the achievements noted above Kirsty also coached the mooting team to success in the IMAC mooting competition in 2017 where Salford Law students beat Cambridge into second place.
Dr Shane Sullivan, Head of Law at the University of Salford, said: “A massive congratulations to Emma, Jafar and lecturer Kirsty Mayle who has coached them really well to get the team this far.”
