PROFESSOR Dave Spicer, Dean of the Business School at the University of Salford and expert in the retail sector, comments on 9,000 job cuts announced today by Tesco. He says online shopping and competition in the sector is to blame.
Professor Spicer said: “On the face of it this might be Tesco responding to both the changing shopping habits of the public – with less people shopping in-store, driven by the growth of shopping online, and hence not using these types of counter services.
"The justification for maintaining them is harder and harder – especially in light of the leaner operating models of competitors such as Aldi and Lidl, which is likely the second factor behind these job cuts, as supermarket sector competition hots up.”
