The Salford Graduate behind Britain's radio ads

Friday 15 March 2019

If you’ve watched TV or had the radio on recently, there’s a chance you’ve heard the voice of Salford University graduate Jack Oddie.

Since graduating in BA Performing Arts, Jack has voiced radio ads for the country’s biggest brands, including Wickes, Virgin Media, ASDA and 4Music.

Last year he was named Best Male Voiceover and won Best Radio Commercial at the VOX Awards for his outstanding work in the industry and the Carlisle-born entrepreneur says it was while at Salford that he developed the skills needed for this highly-competitive industry.

“I loved Salford Uni. I developed loads of little skills that are brilliant for being a voiceover. I picked up things like comic timing and stripping down the text and analysing it, which are essential to my job.

“Salford helped me to fend for myself which is really helpful when you’re going into the world of business.”

His latest achievement is being nominated for five One Voice Awards, including Voiceover Artist of the Year (Male).  The One Voice Awards were founded by the most recognised voiceover artist in the UK - Peter Dickson, best known for his voiceover work on XFactor and Britain’s Got Talent.

Jack said: “I have an incredibly rewarding job, with a really supportive community. Every day is different, you can wake up one day and do all sorts of weird and wonderful things that you didn’t know about yesterday.”

“My advice to any students wanting to go into the industry would be to develop the skill of picking up the phone, introducing yourself and being able to hold a genuine conversation. Get scripts from the internet and read them out loud, listen to voice overs too! You’ll start to realise there’s a voiceover for everything.”
