The sky isn’t the limit: The successes of Launch @SalfordUni’s first cohort of businesses

Tuesday 16 April 2019

From a Vegan delivery company to a business using VR to train Olympians, the first cohort of entrepreneurial students and graduates from the Launch@SalfordUni business incubator have made remarkable progress over the last six months.

Since it was opened by Andy Burnham back in October, the incubator at The University of Salford has gone from strength to strength offering advice, workshops and office space to 20 start-up businesses. There have been 611 hours of hotdesking usage logged at the Launch @SalfordUni  incubator, totalling over 3 weeks of solid working in the space!

The first cohort ran from September to March and saw over half of the entrepreneurs secure funding between £250- £1,000  from the University.

Nicole Lane, who set up the not-for-profit business Project:Trinity with the help of Launch @SalfordUni  said:

“I was really nervous about coming to Launch as I am not business minded. It helped me grow my confidence and understand a business from a logical mindset and not simply a creative one.

Everybody was friendly and approachable and genuinely seem to want to make your business a success. I would never have had the confidence to pitch for funds before Launch. Now, I am looking up more opportunities for funding. “

Another success from the incubator has been Candace James’ business. Through Launch @SalfordUni  she has set up Vegapost.com, a web-based company allowing users to sign up for vegan food deliveries.

She said: “Without the help of Salford University I wouldn’t have been able to get this off the ground at all, I have been supported all the way through what has been quite a journey to get my business this far.”

Other businesses included Sauce Network; who vlog behind the scenes of popular events, Arts Let Loose; who provide arts provision to children and Musicandgigs.co.uk; a website covering huge music events such as BBC Big Weekend and Leeds Festival set up by Television and Radio graduate Sophie Graham.

The new cohort of Launch @SalfordUni entrepreneurs are equally as varied as the last. Settling into the incubator until September are 26 start up businesses with bright ideas.
Kavyasiddhi Mulvey is one of the enterprising students selected to use the facilities with her business Kava Counselling, which already has clients across Greater Manchester. Kava Counselling currently offers 1:1 counselling and group work.
Kavyasiddhi, who studies Counselling and Psychotherapy, said:
“It's the most constructive experience I've had at Salford, the team is professional and warm and that ethos spreads to everyone I've met through Launch.”
