Cecily Shrimpton named in 'Class of 2016' artists

Monday 12 September 2016

VIDEO artist Cecily Shrimpton has been named among the top Fine Art graduates in the north west of England, by art website The Double Negative.

The 23-year-old who graduated from the BA (Hons) Visual Arts degree course is one of 14 young artists selected for the Class of 2016 exhibition.

It starts this week at the Hanover Projects, University of Central Lancashire, Preston and runs until September 29.

It’s a first big break for Cecily, from Abergele, North Wales, since she graduated in July.

Motherhood

Working across sculpture, printmaking and new media, Cecily Shrimpton’s work adopts the fluid approach of contemporary art practice to take an assured, nuanced look at motherhood.

One of her recent videos depicts a solitary metronome on dual screens. The first metronome represents the average heartbeat of a child in the womb; the second is that of a pregnant mother.

Brendan Fletcher, programme leader in Visual Arts at The University of Salford says:“Watching and listening to the two metronomes in syncopation is profound and moving.

“Cecily’s works exhibit an assurance, sophistication and maturity rare at undergraduate level.”

'Best of' exhibition

Each year The Double Negative invites art schools across the North West to nominate one outstanding student to feature in their article ‘Class of 2016’.

And this year the group are producing a united exhibition to represent the scope of fresh talent  - in film, painting, sculpture, installation and performance - currently emerging into the art-world from Carlisle to Manchester.
