Employers back new Chartered Surveying Degree Apprenticeship

CONSTRUCTION giant Morgan Sindall is encouraging industry to put staff through a new degree apprenticeship at The University of Salford.

The University is launching the apprenticeship in Chartered Surveying which allows students to train to become a chartered quantity surveyor in a minimum of three years.

Degree apprentices can split their time between university study and the workplace and will be employed throughout - gaining a bachelor’s degree while earning a wage and getting on-the-job experience.

Morgan Sindall, a construction and regeneration group based at Salford Quays is among firms sending employees to the University from September, and Gill Roberts, from the firm said: “This really is a fantastic opportunity for us especially because being based in Salford - our local University. Investing in upskilling our future employees help us to retain them. I would encourage other employers to buy into this scheme”.

Accelerated route

Degree apprenticeships work on a day-release basis and can achieve the degree element in three years through our accelerated route. After finishing their BSc (hons) in Chartered Surveying, students will take their Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) exams of ‘chartership’ in order to become chartered quantity surveyors.

New apprentice Jonathon Simpson said: “I’m most looking forward to gaining contacts while having the chartership underway. When I graduate I’m interested in working overseas, and in order to do this you really need the chartership.

“I think the biggest benefits are the kind of relationship that it will create. I will be able to see how what I am studying at University relates to the job.”

Professor Will Swan of the University’s School of the Built Environment said: “This is about bringing universities and companies closer together to train people to be the best and most rounded person for that industry.

More than a degree

"Degree Apprenticeships are great because they allow companies to engage fully with the development of their people and share idea with the University.

“There is more to it than just a degree; here the relationship is a lot deeper and employers can show us what skills they want from our students.”

The University of Salford, which prides itself in its strong links with industry and employers, has already launched apprenticeships at degree level in Broadcast Engineering and Electronic Engineering.
