Labour leadership contender launches health vision on campus

Tuesday 16 August 2016

Labour leadership contender Owen Smith launched his vision for health at the University of Salford’s Mary Seacole building.

Speaking to an invited audience of academics, students, local residents, and the media, Mr Smith was welcomed to the home of our School of Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work and Social Science (NMSWSS) by Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Marshall on Monday August 15.

Mr Smith began his speech by saying that: “This is one of the speeches I have most been looking forward to giving.”

He went on to attack the Conservative government’s record on the NHS and to set out his plans for the NHS should he win the leadership contest in September.

Later he took questions from the audience, before being taken on a tour of our new simulation suites by Brian Boag (Interim Dean of the School of NMSWSS) and Neil Withnell (Associate Dean Academic Enhancement and Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing).

He met staff and students and tested his resuscitation skills on one of the electronic manikins in our simulated hospital ward setting.

Mr Smith’s visit follows on from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s visit to the University in May, where he learned about our role in regenerating Salford and visited our Energy House.

Both these high profile visits to campus reflect our growing reputation in the region and are part of our aim to raise the University’s profile within the Devo Manc agenda and the wider public policy arena.

Watch our interview with Owen Smith, in which he describes the NHS as “Part of the fabric of Britain” and also talks about his vision for universities, including the need for more to be done on widening participation:
