Manchester Institute of Health & Performance announces collaboration with Salford University

The pioneering Manchester Institute of Health and Performance, the first facility of its kind in the UK, has formed an alliance with the University of Salford to deliver a research programme incorporating public health and sports performance.
Based within the heart of the East Manchester community, The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance (MIHP) is an £18 million purpose-built facility designed to create a world-class environment for diagnosis, education and research in health and performance.
MIHP is the result of six years of planning and research made up by a partnership team of Manchester City Council, Sport England and City Football Group. As the world’s largest private hospital group, and with a proven track record in delivering high quality healthcare in the region, HCA Healthcare UK has been brought on board to operate the facility.
The collaborative research agenda was approved by The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance’s Scientific Advisory Board. The board is made up of two members from each of the facility’s stakeholders; Manchester City Council, Sport England, City Football Group and HCA Healthcare UK.
Key areas of work will cover both health and physical activity including osteoarthritis of the knee, footwear interventions for meniscectomy patients and running performance. The agreement with The University of Salford also incorporates a full-time postdoctoral researcher who will be based at MIHP for two years.

Andrew Hampson, Head of Research and Enterprise at The University of Salford, added: “The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance is a world-class centre and this partnership will provide our students and academics with unique opportunities to collaborate with the brightest and best in the health care and elite sports industries, as well as providing access to facilities which can’t be found anywhere else in the UK.”
Professor Richard Jones, Clinical Biomechanics Research Lead at the University of Salford and The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance (MIHP), said: “The partnership will enable us to carry out valuable research into conditions such as osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal diseases which affect millions in the UK.
“We hope that by working together with The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance and other partners we can go on to make a genuine difference to the health of people across the region and even the world.”
