Maxine Peake leads star line up for Salford ‘radical’ fundraiser

Tuesday 22 November 2016

MAXINE Peake and Christopher Eccleston lead a star line-up of ‘radical speakers’ at the University of Salford this weekend.

Sheila Hancock, Julie Hesmondhalgh and Mike Joyce will take part in an afternoon of 'prose, poetry and drama telling stories of radicalism and revolution' to raise money for the Salford Working Class Movement Library.

Old Salford and activism provide the theme for Radical Readings and Salford Stories 2, fundraiser on Sunday 27th November (2pm) at the University's Maxwell Hall.

The event, in conjunction with the University, features work by Ewan MacColl, Robert Roberts, Shelagh Delaney, Harold Brighouse and many more

There will be also readings on Peterloo, the Spanish Civil War, Engels' view of the Salford slums, and memories of Broad Street and Rat Week.

"It is always a pleasure and an honour to take part in the Radical Reading and support the wonderful and invaluable resource that is the Working Class Movement Library. A building we should all be proud of" said Peake, star of Shameless, Silk and the Theory of Everything, and the voiceover artist for the University's autumn advertising campaign 'Be Brave'.

Tickets for the fundraiser are £12 and available here.  The first Radical Readings event sold out incredibly quickly.
