Nursing student's artwork to feature at Royal College of Nursing Centenary

Artwork by a University of Salford nursing student will be featured at the Royal College of Nursing centenary celebrations.
Laura Shkandrij, a second year Adult Nursing student, has contributed a piece of artwork to the event taking place later this month.
Laura and five other competition winners were asked to paint words that represented nursing to them by British contemporary artist Peter Liversidge, who will bring together the final composition. Laura chose the words ‘Thank you’, ‘I’ll be back in a minute’, and ‘little moments’ amongst others.
The competition brings together Laura’s two loves - art and nursing. She enjoys painting and drawing in her spare time and completed a Printed Textiles Degree before returning to university. Laura, aged 30, chose to study Adult Nursing after seeing the care her Grandma received from nurses when she was ill.
This first-hand experience sparked a desire in Laura to help people and she was soon volunteering in a patients' art room and chemotherapy unit at The Christie Hospita’.
She said: “After volunteering at The Christie, I ran art sessions for people with mental health difficulties, worked as a nursing home care assistant for the elderly and as a support worker for people with learning difficulties. Art and nursing mean the world to me and I feel strongly about the use of art in promoting mental and emotional well-being.
“Seeing my artwork at the RCN centenary will be an absolute privilege, although I do feel slightly nervous about other people being able to see it!”
The final composition will be unveiled at the RCN on Saturday 29 October 2016 in a double celebration which marks the centenary and the Museums at Night Festival, the UK’s annual after-hours festival of arts, culture and heritage.
