Salford student to campaign for Hillary Clinton in Miami

Thursday 27 October 2016

A politics student at The University of Salford is preparing to fly to Miami to campaign for Hillary Clinton to become the first woman president of the USA.

Stacey Tizzard, 21, will be going from door to door in the final weeks of the presidential race, campaigning for Clinton to be elected, before voters head to the polls on November 8th.

Stacey participated in a programme ’45 for the 45th’, which is a not-for-profit organisation which sends 45 of the brightest and most politically engaged university students from around the United Kingdom to help on a presidential campaign.

The budding politicians have the chance to experience the presidential race for themselves, campaigning on the ground for their preferred candidate. They will use their experiences to engage more young people in politics in Britain.

Miami is a significant city for Stacey to be campaigning in, because polls have already opened there for optional early voting.

The third year student, from Puriton, Bridgwater in Somerset said: “I am excited to be flying out to Miami and can’t wait to start campaigning over there. I’ll be door knocking and handing out leaflets in support of Hillary Clinton. In my opinion, out of the two candidates remaining, she has the policies that are the most inclusive to all.

“I have been interested in American politics since I was very young, and I think it is important to have a view on what is happening over there at the moment because what takes place politically over there affects the rest of the world in some way.  I hope that my experience in Miami means that I can engage more young people to take part in politics when I get back”.

Stacey’s politics lecturer, Professor James Newell, told her about the opportunity to be involved in the presidential race. He said: "This is a very exciting opportunity for a gifted student such as Stacey to be involved in what has been one of the bitterest and most sensational of American presidential election campaigns in living memory. We shall all be eagerly waiting to hear news of Stacey's exploits upon her return".

Last year, Stacey spent the first semester of her second year studying at a University in Detroit, part of the exchange programme that is offered to students on the BA (Hons) International Relations and Politics course. Stacey flies out to Miami on November 1st.
