Students create Donald Trump online game

Monday 7 November 2016

MANCHESTER ENGAGEMENT AGENCY Trunk has teamed up with students at The University of Salford to launch a Donald Trump inspired online game.

The fun game, called ‘Hell Toupee’, which you can play here involves users scoring points the quicker they manage to ‘punch’ the Trump character.

In less than 24 hours Americans will head to the polls, in what has been one of the most sensational elections in living memory.

Final year students Jessica Lea and Stephanie McLean became involved in the project to produce an online game, while they were on placement over the summer with Big Brand Ideas, a sister company of Trunk.

The internship was set up by Juan Hiriart, a Computer and Video-games lecturer at The University of Salford.

Jess said: “It's amazing now that the online game has been launched, and it feels great to be part of the political conversation, even if it is a little tongue in cheek. We aimed to make something that gave people the opportunity to vent their frustrations.

“We wanted to be silly with it, and with the current climate I think everyone can benefit from having a laugh. We were lucky to be able to do this with the help of Big Brand Ideas, and we worked together to make something great”.

The students are studying for a BSc (Hons) Computer and Video Games, a highly reputable course within the School of Arts and Media.

Adam Britton, Creative Director of both Big Brand Ideas & Trunk said “Jess & Steph were a pleasure to have around the office. In the short time they were on placement with us, they were able to build two fantastically addictive games that have already been played by thousands online.

They took a brief and ran with it, which is always great to see. Although they previously didn't have much experience in Games Development they were able to quickly learn and adapt their skills accordingly. We would definitely be open to the idea of more interns from The University of Salford working with us in the future”.

Programme Lead Mick Lockwood said “Building relationships is critical in aligning our student experience with the requirements of local industry; we hope to work with Big Brand Ideas and Trunk to develop more excellent student opportunities, providing real world experience, giving our graduates an edge in the digital marketplace.

“Of course, we don’t endorse violence, and the game that the girls created while they were on placement reflects a current trend in online video games".
