Ambitious students at The University of Salford have taken part in a European racing car competition at Silverstone.
It was the first year that the University took part in Formula Student 2016, an event that sees students from across the globe demonstrate their engineering and business skills.
Despite being the smallest team to enter the competition, aptly named ‘Formula Salford’ finished 18th out of 34 teams who competed at Class 2, making them the fifth best University team from the UK.
Students from the School of Science and Engineering and the Business School collaborated to project manage and build the chassis of a racing car.
Joshua Jones, team director and mechanical engineering student at the University of Salford said:
“Being at Silverstone was an inspiring experience; we were rubbing shoulders with engineers from Formula 1. You look at the level the other mechanics are operating at and you see how professional it is.”
The team, who are members of the University of Salford Racing Society, are already excited for next year, where they will enter Class 1 of the competition, and construct an entire racing car.
Formula Student is Europe's most established educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Marius Monoranu, an aeronautical engineering student who has just completed a successful placement with Scottish Power, helped to build the chassis.
He said: “I am really looking forward to taking part in the event again next year, where as a team we will help design and construct an entire racing car. My degree and the placement that I have been on have helped to develop my engineering skills, and I am looking forward to starting my final year of university this September.”
Lecturer from the School of Science and Engineering, Dr Henry Leonard, said: “The formula student team have worked extremely hard on this exciting design, build and test project during the academic year.
“They have been very professional in their approach, holding regular meetings and developing an effective plan of action, which has resulted in the production of a chassis. Each member of the team has developed new skills in different areas of the Engineering discipline which will give them real confidence as they develop their chosen career path”.
The other students who took part in the event were Abel Semere, Alexandra Guy, Mo Shah, Nathan Hall, Panos Palamidas and Sara Javed.
