Technology in the Home - conference

Tuesday 12 July 2016

INTELLIGENT systems will shape the future of our domestic lives  – helping us cut energy and save money, manage our social calendar – even monitor our health!

The technologies may make commercial sense, but are they affordable, sustainable, or ethical?

THINKlab - the University of Salford’s future lab is hosting a Smart Homes Conference this Wednesday, 13th July to debate some of the issues.

From streamlining our increasingly busy lives to supporting individuals with long term health issues, smart homes have the potential to enrich the lives of those who live in them.  By harnessing the potential of technological advancement, smart homes can change the way we approach societal problems and live our everyday lives.

Topics of interest

The Conference and Exhibition – jointly hosted with Salford Professional Development offers exclusive insights from pioneers in smart home technology on the following topics:

*Ethical and Social – How can smart home technology be used to support those with health and social care needs, and what are the ethical debates around this?
*Building Management – How can efficiencies be designed in to improve asset management and ensure housing is sustainable?
*Standards and Technology – As smart home technology grows, how can designers ensure device compatibility and set standards for software development?
*Applications – What potential does smart home technology have to revolutionise our approach to health and wellbeing, care, energy and entertainment?

The conference will be chaired by Professor Terrence Fernando, Director of THINKlab, with Will Swan, Professor of Building Energy Performance, presenting on the case for intelligent energy controls, and Dr Shamaila Iram talking about accessing Smart Home Data through interactive web-based interfaces.
