University of Salford to provide world class education in Bahrain

A unique partnership aimed at providing a world class education for the Middle East and beyond has been created between the University of Salford and the Bahraini Royal Family and was approved by the Bahraini Government on 4th July 2016.
The British College of Bahrain (BCB) will deliver a range of undergraduate degree programmes on a brand new purpose built campus. The courses have been specifically selected to address skill shortages across Bahrain, as identified by the Government and employers. They are aimed at contributing to growth in the national and regional economy.
Announced by University of Salford Vice Chancellor Professor Helen Marshall and His Highness Shaikh Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the BCB will feature cutting edge facilities. A key part of the agreement will be the creation of an innovation hub, enabling businesses to engage with faculty staff and students on live projects, providing value both to industry and to students. Space will be provided to support start-up businesses and social enterprises.
The brand new campus in Janabiyah will welcome the first cohort of up to 100 students in September 2017, with plans for significant growth in the following years. It is part of the University of Salford’s aim to grow its international reach, enabling it to meet the needs of an ever changing higher education landscape both at home and abroad. This new partnership solidifies Salford’s position as a truly international university which aims to closely serve the needs of industry and drive the development of best practice in learning.
BCB will deliver STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) programmes designed to encourage more Bahrainis and those from other Gulf nations to develop specific skills and knowledge, currently provided by international workers. Among the sectors that are likely to benefit are industrial design, the Oil and Gas sector, manufacturing, architecture and construction.
Professor Helen Marshall, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salford, said: “The British College in Bahrain will be a unique arrangement and is a great opportunity for both parties. It is a huge honour to have been asked to partner with the Bahraini Royal Family to launch this college.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to give young people in Bahrain and the Middle East the benefit of a world-class education and knowledge that The University of Salford can provide.
“The University of Salford was recently named in the top 200 most international universities in the world and this initiative will only help us to grow our international reach.”
His Highness Shaikh Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa said: “It is with great pleasure that I announce this partnership with The University of Salford.
“Plugging the skills shortage is one of the key priorities for our country. The British College of Bahrain will hopefully offer up a huge range of opportunities for our young people to get the skills they need for the 21st century global marketplace, and contribute to continuing economic growth, without having to leave the country.”
The curriculum will be based on that delivered to Salford students and will result in the same degree. Adaptations will be made with input from regional industrial figures.
BCB will initially offer the following undergraduate courses from the University of Salford:
- Foundation and transition programmes
- Civil Engineering
- Architectural Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Petroleum & Mechanical Engineering
- Computer Science
- Quantity Surveying
- Operational/Engineering Management
