University of Salford welcomes new nursing Dean

Monday 5 September 2016

A new Dean has been appointed to the University of Salford’s School of Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work and Social Sciences.

Margaret Rowe joins the University on September 5, leading the school which takes in areas including sociology and criminology alongside nursing and midwifery programmes.

Margaret was formerly Associate Dean (Business and Engagement) in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Northumbria University, which she joined in 1996 as Senior Lecturer of Children’s Nursing.

She joins the University during exciting times, as Salford is one of the largest educator of nurses, midwives and allied health professionals in the North West and is set to play a pivotal role in the Devo Manc agenda – in which Greater Manchester’s 10 boroughs will work with NHS trusts and clinical commissioning groups to take control of the region’s health and social care budget.

The School has recently unveiled a set of high-tech nursing simulation suites to train the next generation of nurses, midwives and counsellors, featuring rooms which are designed to look exactly like hospital wards and which contain electronic manikins operated by specialist technicians from adjoining control rooms.

Before moving into academia, Margaret worked as a Registered General Nurse and a Senior Clinical Nurse Manager in Children’s Services, and she currently serves as the Higher Education national representative on the Nursing and Midwifery Council Revalidation Strategic Steering Group.

As a Council of Deans’ representative, Margaret has collaborated in the development of guidelines for institutions in relation to the revalidation process – the system introduced in April to ensure nurses and midwives keep their skills up to date so they continue to practice safely and effectively.

She is a member of the North Tyneside Health and Social Integration Programme Board and has worked with Health Education England, national and regional bodies, and the North East Combined Authority.

Professor Richard Stephenson, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Salford, said: “I am delighted to welcome Margaret to the University, where she will lead a school facing exciting times.

“The University educates one of the highest numbers of nurses, midwives and allied health professionals in the North West, with our learning environment recently enhanced through the creation of our £1.7m state of the art simulation suites providing students with the best training possible before they begin hospital placements. Over the next few years we are also set to play a pivotal role in the Devo Manc health and social care agenda.

“Margaret is a highly respected strategic leader with an excellent reputation for enhancing the student experience, and stakeholder engagement through enterprise and research partnership.

“She also brings a wealth of international experience, including the successful development of new programmes and partnerships, and we are all looking forward to working closely with her as the University of Salford continues to develop.”

Margaret said: “I was attracted by the excellent reputation of the School and its breadth of disciplines, as well as the University’s many exciting links with industry and public sector partners. Working with a huge range of partners across health and social care is an essential element of modern healthcare and Salford – through its Industry Collaboration Zone (ICZ) strategy – genuinely appreciates the importance of external engagement, and therefore provides its students with a unique experience which prepares them for the real world.

“Having been intrigued by the prospects offered by the ICZ strategy, I am keen to expand on this valuable work by developing these relationships and leading the School in a way that encourages social responsibility and collaboration.”
