Fashion programme shortlisted for Guardian award

Wednesday 8 March 2017

An innovative collaboration with a Chinese institution has seen the University of Salford’s fashion programme shortlisted for a prestigious Guardian University Award.

The programme is one of just three universities across the UK to have reached the shortlist in the teaching excellence category of the awards.

Judges were impressed with a project run by the programme in which the University’s fashion students spent one day working with their counterparts at the Zhejing Fashion Institute of Technology (ZFIT) in China.

Tutors from both institutions placed students into groups, each comprising one or two students from Salford who acted as creative directors as they worked with Chinese design students.

The groups were presented with a single word and colour and were given just nine hours to design and create a collection of outfits which they had to present at their own fashion show.

The project, which is to become an annual event, attracted media coverage in China, increasing the University’s profile in the region, and fulfilled a key role of the ICZ strategy, which seeks to enrich the lives of students by strengthening our international partnerships and collaborating with experts to co-create exceptional transnational partnerships.

Fashion graduate Lauren Tozer, who took part in the project and now works for River Island, said: “This was an eye opening and very rewarding project. I have found that having gained this experience has not only been very interesting to employers but has helped me understand sourcing and working better with suppliers during my employment.”

Fashion programme leader Bashir Aswat said: “It’s a huge honour to have the opportunities that we’re offering for our students recognised by being shortlisted for this award.

“This was a cutting edge project which had not previously been done on this scale, involving 20 students from Salford and 200 from China, and it offered them unrivalled experience of working to tight deadlines with people from vastly different cultural backgrounds – something that’s essential in the global fashion industry.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Wednesday 29 March.
