Salford graduate offered places at every medical school he applied to

Friday 19 May 2017

A BIOMEDICAL science graduate who swapped being a soldier to studying at the University of Salford, has been offered a place to study at every medical school that he applied to.

Liam Pendlebury, 26, achieved one of the highest results in his cohort when he graduated last year with a First class degree in BA (Hons) Biomedical Science.

Since graduating, Liam, from Walkden, has been working in the dermatology department at Salford Royal Hospital. He applied to study medicine through the graduate entry route, and was recently offered places at all of the Universities he applied to, including Kings College London and the University of Sheffield.

He said: “I’m delighted to have been offered places to study at medical school, so now I’ve got quite a tough but an exciting decision to make. After trying out quite a few jobs, I’m really pleased that I’ve found something that I enjoy doing.

“Being at Salford, I had the opportunity on my course to work in all different areas of the subject. I also did quite a few industry placements in hospitals across the North West, and that helped me decide where I want to work in the future”.

After leaving college signed up to join the British Army for 18 months at the Catterick Garrison army barracks in North Yorkshire. He then worked at Next as a suit salesman.

However, after achieving high A-Levels, Liam decided to enrol on the highly reputable biomedical science course, which is in the School of Environment and Life Sciences. Whilst at University, Liam co-founded the medicine society.

He said: “When I left college I didn’t know which career path I wanted to follow, so I tried out a few things to find the thing that I really like doing. I had some amazing experiences in the army with some of the other lads, but I was honest with myself and decided it was not a job that I could realistically see myself doing in twenty years time. I decided to come to Salford because I really liked the place when I looked round on an open day. After medical school, I can see myself working as a surgeon. I’ve watched surgery take place before and I enjoy working in that kind of environment”.

Liam’s final year personal tutor at the University of Salford said: “Liam is a fantastic role model for current biomedical science students at the University of Salford. He is very forward thinking, helpful and is always full of ideas so I am not surprised that he has recently been offered places to study medicine at every University he applied to.

I couldn’t be prouder of him, and it is fantastic that he has agreed to come back to the university to help mentor current students on the graduate entry medical scheme.”
