Salford nursing students teach primary school pupils accident prevention

Monday 20 March 2017

Primary school children in Salford have been learning essential accident prevention with the help of students at the University of Salford.

Volunteer nurses from the University are teaming up with global medical education charity Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) to deliver Early Learning for Safety workshops to nursery and reception class children, at four local primary schools.

The first set of workshops were delivered last week to pupils at Moorside Primary School in Swinton. During the workshops, youngsters are taught how to stay safe at home and prevent accidents, as well as crucial information such as how to ring for an ambulance in an emergency.

Rebecca Edgerley, 26, was one of the students who helped to deliver the training sessions last week. She said:

"Children are extremely vulnerable to the everyday dangers that surround them. These dangers have the potential to cause significant harm. Myself and the ALSG think it is important to educate children in identifying and avoiding danger. However, we also know accidents can happen and children do get hurt."

The training that is being delivered follows the accident-prone teddy bear mascot 'Elfie'.

Rebecca continues: "As a student nurse at Salford University, I have seen how scared children can become when attending accident and emergency.  Elfie the teddy bear helps expose the children to the routine health checks they would receive by a healthcare professional, and this helps improve their understanding and reduce their fears”.

“I first joined the ALSG during my second year as a student nurse alongside my other nursing colleagues. Becoming a member of ALSG Safe community training team has provided me with the opportunity to develop my teaching skills and educate others in first response and emergency care, a passion of mine that is continuing to grow. It's great to put what I have learned on my course into practice, and I feel a sense of achievement that I've given a child the information they need to stay safe and cared for".

The Early Learning for Safety workshops have been made possible thanks to Salford CCG, through the Schools’ Health and Innovation Fund and administered by Salford CVS.

Ann Wolfendale, ALSG SAFE Community Coordinator said: “We are delighted to have the support of our Student Nurse Community Trainers in delivering these workshops.  Raising awareness of potential dangers in and around the home is extremely important, especially for this age group. A big thank you to all the schools involved, we are really excited to be working with you towards a safer community”.

The students working with ALSG to deliver the courses study Nursing /RN Children and Young People's (BSc Hons). You can follow ALSG on twitter here and ALSG SAFE Community here.
