Salford student secures Mail Online reporter role

A STUDENT at the University of Salford has secured his ‘dream’ job, working as a trainee reporter at the Mail Online.
Nathan Salt, 21, beat thousands of people to get the job, which will see him work on the sports desk at the Mail online for twelve months.
Nathan, from Mold, said: “I went to work at the Mail in November, as part of a professional practice module at Uni. I really enjoyed myself, and the team were great, so I’m really delighted to be going back.
“Ever since I decided I wanted to get in to journalism, I’ve worked as hard as I could to make my dream a reality. I am confident that I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today, had I not studied at the University of Salford because here I have had the chance to work at several top media outlets which has helped me to build up my CV.”
“One of my highlights was working at BBC Sport during the Rio Olympics. I wrote articles for the website and updated the Twitter feed, it was amazing to be part of that. At University I have also had the chance to work at Manchester United, writing match reports on big games”.
First Class Student
Nathan is due to graduate with a First Class BA (Hons) degree in Multimedia Journalism from the University of Salford in July. He will begin his new job, which is based in London, in September.
Martin Hamer, Nathan’s personal tutor and a BBC Sport journalist said: "I am not surprised at all that Nathan will be
gin his full-time journalism career working for such a high-profile organisation.
"He has been a model student since the day he arrived at Salford and is a credit both to himself and the university. He's hard-working, talented, persistent and conscientious - the kind of qualities needed to be successful at the highest level as a journalist.
"He has worked tirelessly in everything he has done. He edited our student-run Quays News website, working evenings and at weekends when necessary, I have seen him go out of his way on numerous occasions to help fellow students and he goes about everything in a very professional and thoughtful manner. I have every confidence he will go far in journalism and we wish him the very best in his career.”
He follows in the footsteps of an extensive list of graduates who have secured reporting roles at some of the biggest newspapersin the country, including Todd Fitzgerald a journalist at the Manchester Evening News and Steve Feekins, Editor at Fifa.com.
“Make the most of every opportunity”
He offers the following advice to first year journalists: “My advice for first year students would definitely be to make the most of every opportunity that you have while you are at Uni. Network, and meet people whose job it is you want, because in my experience you can learn so much from the people who you want to mirror”.
