Showcase of UK’s best comic talent comes to New Adelphi

A night showcasing the UK’s best new comedy is coming to the University of Salford next week.
The Salford Suspiciously Cheap Comedy night, curated by critically acclaimed sketch groups Gein’s Family Giftshop and Goose, is being held at the University’s New Adelphi Theatre on Monday 13 March at 7.30pm.
The show, which has previously featured acts such as Greg Davies, Daniel Kitson, Dane Baptiste and Bridget Christie when held in other locations, is so called because it brings audiences the UK’s best comedy line-ups for just £5.
The night features Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Adam Riches and Luisa Omielan, who was described by The Guardian as ‘one of the biggest stand up hits of the decade’ and created the best-selling show What Would Beyonce Do?
It will also feature Jamali Maddix, who won the Chortle Student Comedian of the Year award and recently appeared on Live At The Apollo, as well as hosting the Hate Thy Neighbour documentary on extremism with Vice.
All three comics have previously been students at the University, while Gein’s Family Giftshop – themselves described as ‘something genuinely new’ by The Sunday Times – are also graduates of the University’s theatre performance degree programme. The group’s Kiri Pritchard Mclean also runs workshops teaching comedy skills to the programme’s stand-up students.
The New Adelphi Arts Centre is the new home of the University’s School of Arts and Media, and as well as providing students with cutting edge facilities is opening its doors to the public as an exciting new venue where members of the public can enjoy an exciting programme of performances.
Other shows coming to the venue include Withering Looks, which won a Manchester Evening News award and Critics Award for Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival, which will take place there on March 24.
Frances Piper, Director of Performance at the University’s School of Arts and Media, said: “The University of Salford was the first in the UK to teach stand-up comedy as part of our performance programme, and so hosting an event in which some of the country’s hottest new comic talent – all of whom have previously studied here – return to perform at the University will be really special.
“New Adelphi will not only provide an artistic hub for our students, but a programme of events will make it a mainstay of Greater Manchester’s cultural landscape, and we’re delighted to be hosting exciting theatrical events in the building.”
